Defea Chan's Enroute story

Defea Chan’s Enroute story
Blog

Defea is our Social Media Manager, having joined Enroute in mid-2024, and has answered a few questions for us about what she does at Enroute and in her day-to-day life, as well as her experience and Enroute and what motivates her to volunteer.

What made you join Enroute?

I am passionate about driving sustainable development and believe everyone shall take little steps to contribute to this everyday. When I just moved to the UK, I hoped to give back to the society. Enroute’s vision of advocating for green transport across Great Britain aligns with mine. I was impressed by Enroute’s transport and policy research and engagement works and wanted to be part of the professional team.

What do you do in your day-to-day job or studies?

I work as a Customer Advisor of a Japanese clothing brand. My day-to-day routines are providing excellent service to enhance customers’ shopping experiences, analysing sales data of different product categories and generating recommendations to drive sales and achieve the store’s targets. I studied marketing and communications at the university and am interested in amplifying the organisation/brand’s messaging and expanding their reach through social media, digital communications and public relations.

What is your role at Enroute, and what do you typically work on?

I work as a Social Media Manager at Enroute. My regular tasks are promoting Enroute’s research, blogs, consultation responses and other works through drafting post messages and creating visuals for our social media channels, including Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and X. I also improve the post performance by analysing our target audiences and adjusting content angles.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering with Enroute?

I enjoy working with the knowledgeable and professional team, who are passionate about their work and always support each other to drive Enroute forward and help transform transport across Great Britain. The team is also very flexible and open-minded and allows everyone to share their ideas and suggestions and experimenting with their projects.

What has been your favourite project or activity at Enroute so far?

My favourite project at Enroute is launching the Instagram account. I had the flexibility to shape the branding of the organisation and curate content for different social media platforms. I could test different formats of content, for example, infographics and short Instagram stories videos. This allowed me to explore different functions of the platform and encouraged me to enhance my social media content development skills by searching for more reference and publishing actual works.

If you had an unlimited budget for a transport project, what would you love to see happen?

If I had an unlimited budget for a transport project, I would build walkways and cycle routes in different neighbourhoods, especially near high streets. I enjoy walking or cycling to shop for groceries, grab a coffee or eat out with my friends. It would be much safer if there were designated routes to link the neighbourhoods and encouraged more people to switch from driving to walking or cycling.

Any other comments you'd like to add?

Volunteering at Enroute gives me sense of achievement, especially seeing my work on public platforms and receiving comments from the audience.
